House built on the Rock or on Sand

P. Tuchyna

Matthew 7:24

  • Can you rebuild the foundation without pulling down the house?

  • Did Christians sell their birthright for a mess of social and psychological pottage?

One of the most overlooked and neglected role of the Lord Jesus Christ in the life of professing Christians seems to be the role of a Counselor.

  • We do recognize Him as our Saviour, our Deliverer, our Healer, and our Provider but often His involvement and influence as a Counselor goes unnoticed.

  • We seek advice, when buying a car, house, white goods, when working on our personal and house insurance, superannuation, computer, holiday and so on.

The vast number of incidents among professing Christians pertaining to conflicts and unhappiness in marriage, conflicts between believers, the offences, unresolved issues, lack of respect one towards another, backbiting, harshness in words, attitude and voice, unforgiveness, clinging to the past hurts are all signs that Jesus is indeed not sought in our lives as a Counselor when we take our personal and daily behavior into account.

In my role as a Pastor, I have been exposed to many situations where the spouse told me for example that she is unable to talk openly to her husband about her own personal feelings towards him for:

“ he does not listen to me, he always overrules me, he does not look at me as an equal partner in anything, whatever I say, whatever I recommend is not good. I am good just to be a servant, to clean, to wash, to cook, to look after the children and listen with an admiration to all his important stories whether real or imaginary.”

“ I lost my respect for him and I am afraid that I am loosing my love for him.

What keeps me going is my responsibility towards the children and I am thinking what would others thing if I would walk away from the life of hypocrisy.”

Or – “ I really have deep desire to serve the Lord in reaching the lost souls, but my wife has such a great demand for finances and it seems to me that we are changing things, we are buying things we don’t need, but my wife does not see it. ”

It seems that we are living life just for ourselves and I am living with guilt that I am not fulfilling the purpose of life but to bring any change into our life would cause marriage problems ”

…and so on.

In the parable about the house build upon the rock and upon the sand is described the reality of life.

When the foundation of a life itself (lifestyle), the values, involvements, attitudes are not based upon the principles of the Word of God but it is a mixture of personal expectation, imagination and experimentation and desire to combine the best from both worlds spiritual and carnal, that we have individuals described by apostle Paul as having the form of godliness but denied the power thereof.
From such turn away!

Have you ever seen anybody rebuilding the foundation of the house with the house standing intact?

You cannot rebuild the foundation without pulling apart the house.

The very reason why there is no spiritual progress and change in life and behaviour of some individuals attending churches even for a long period of time already, is because the foundation of their mindset is wrong.

The foundation is build upon the straw, sand of their imagination rather than placed upon the principles of the Word of God.

They are spending time and effort to stop the cracks in the walls of their life by using injections into some parts of the foundation.
It does not work!

Unless such an individual is willing to pull down the house of his / her mindset, customs, habits, routine, life philosophy there never will be a genuine change in the life producing the nine fruit of the Holy Spirit transparent especially under the pressure of life and circumstances..

The Bible recognizes only two natures – the heavenly and the earthly!
